Harley E. Melton, 87, of Spencer, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 20, 2022 at the McCormicks Creek Nursing Home in Spencer. Harley was born in Marion, Indiana on May 22, 1935 to Harley A. Melton and Bonnie Jean (Scott) and raised by his grandparents, Calvin “Rhodes” Scott and Mary Evelyn Scott. Harley proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany and Japan. Harley loved the Japanese culture, and it was there that he learned to speak fluent Japanese. Harley graduated high school in Japan with much help and persistence from his Grandma Scott and Oscar Tucker, Spencer School Board member. Harley was also fluent in the German language. He married the love of his life, Janice “Dee” A. (Williams) Melton on August 25, 1961. Harley was known as a public servant, having held the office of Owen County Sheriff for 16 years and then Owen County Clerk for 8 years and then farmed his land until recently. Harley belonged and was active in the Indiana Sheriffs Association, was past president of the Owen County Fair Board, the Owen County Democrats, the Spencer American Legion #285, the Spencer VFW # 1405, the Spencer Masonic Lodge #95, Spencer Exchange Club, the York Rite, Scottish Rite, Shriners, the Knights of Pythias, and attended the Spencer United Methodist Church.
Harley is survived by his son, Greg (Amy) Melton, grandchildren, Kristen Heath, Judson (Jackie) Casebeer, Emily (Dustin) O’Hair, Shelby Wood, Annalese (Robert) Stewart, Sarah Melton (Jeremy Feltner), 14 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Sharon (Dave) Miller, sister-in-law, Latisha “Lettie” Melton, extended family members and many, many friends.
Harley was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, wife, one grandson, Steven Melton, and one brother Allen R. “Pat” Melton.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 25, 2022 at the Spencer United Methodist Church, 95 West Franklin Street, Spencer, Indiana. Brother Bill Williams will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, with Military Rites conducted by the Owen County Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Friday, June 24, 2022 at the West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home, 105 North Montgomery Street, Spencer, with Masonic Service at 7:00 PM. Additional visitation will be 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, at the Spencer Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to the Indiana Sheriffs Association Youth Camp, through the funeral home.
